Piinellas County School District Teacher of the Year - Laura Kingsland

Laura Kingsland has been named the 2016 Teacher of the Year for the Pinellas County School District. Kingsland is the Director of the Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Driving program at Pinellas Technical College (PTC) in St. Petersburg, Florida. The announcement was made at the annual school district staff meeting in August 2016.

After a long and successful truck driving career, Kingsland began to teach and supervise at PTC. Under her leadership, the CMV Driving program has progressed to be known as one of the top training programs in the nation. In addition to vocational education for the public, PTC has become a reliable resource for federal, state and local agencies and organizations by providing training, certification, inspection and examination services related to commercial vehicle operations. Kingsland supervises a staff of four employees and actively participates in all aspects of the program. She is also current President of the National Association of Publicly Funded Truck Driving Schools. To promote and encourage women entering the trucking industry, Kingsland implemented a benefit for female students in PTC’s CMV Driving program to receive a one-year paid membership in Women In Trucking.

Recent PTC CDL Class A graduate Cynthia Truewell says of the program and staff, “They guided me to fulfill the dream of being a professional driver and it was an incredible experience! I am proud to relay the announcement that my instructor, Laura Kingsland, is Pinellas County School District 2016 Teacher of the Year and recognize her as shining among the many “women in trucking.”
